What is an ELSA? ELSAs are Emotional Literacy Support Assistants. They are teaching assistants who have received specific training to support children and young people's social and emotional development from Educational Psychologists from whom they receive ongoing supervision following training. An ELSA's role is to help children and young people in schools and settings to understand and regulate their own emotions whilst also respecting the feelings of those around them. How do ELSAs make a difference? ELSAs provide a safe space for children and young people to reflect on their social and emotional skills in a 1:1 or small group situation. They deliver short-term purposeful intervention to enable children and young people to learn specific new skills and strategies which support their emotional wellbeing. ELSAs work to specific programme aims that are realistic and can be achieved within a school term. For further information on the ELSA role, please visit www.ELSAnetwork.org. What does ELSA training look like? ELSA training is delivered over five days and includes: - Raising emotional literacy awareness - Building resilience and self-esteem - Emotional regulation - Social and friendship skills - Loss, bereavement and family break up - Active listening and reflective conversations Reflective supervision is essential to the ongoing effectiveness of ELSA programmes and to continue building the competence and confidence of ELSAs. To be awarded the title of ELSA, delegates must attend all five training days and attend half-termly reflective supervision led by an Educational Psychologist. Reflective supervision will be in a maximum group of eight ELSAs and last two hours.
